A daily-ish photoblog with large images of Buenos Aires

La Manea Polo

Back in June I got to tag along with a journalist for The Argentimes for a day at a Polo School near Ezeiza airport. The article is finally online; Saddle Up: Polo for Beginners. Here are more images from that lovely day.

Rucula 2 x 2.50

villaurquiza-verduleria-3607
Two bunches of rucula for 2.50 pesos. All the English menus here use the British term "rocket" instead of rucula. Lame!

Basil and cherry tomatoes. I think I'll make pasta tonight.

Cafe de Los Incas

VillaUrquiza-cafedelosincas-3596
The Incan Cafe, tudor-style. In fairness they're located on Avenida de Los Incas, which surely explains the name.

Domestic Obsessions

Continuing with my recent obsessions I can't stop looking at the limited and endlessly repeating patterns of potted plants and small landscaping.

Villa Urquiza Chalets

VillaUrquiza-chalet-3593
I realize the Chalet-thing is getting to be a bit of an obsession, but I can't resist. Villa Urquiza is a neighborhood that's seen a lot of construction recently with the extension of the B-line of the subway. There's a lot of new money and a lot of new Chalets! I liked this one here, white, surrounded by red brick. It's an inversion of the regular pattern.

Berazategui - From the Car

quilmes-berazategui-8245
I'd seen this complex from the freeway to La Plata and it's always intrigued me.

Here's the entrance to the cemetery in Berazategui.

I don't just photograph new and tacky buildings.

Quilmes Balneario - II

quilmes-balneario-2-8373
Here's some more photos of the balneario in Quilmes. It'd decidedly working class and the river, downstream from Buenos Aires, a very polluted. Still, I enjoyed the relaxed Sunday vibe.

Quilmes Balneario - I

quilmes-balneario-1-8318
A couple of Sunday's ago it was an unseasonable warm 93 degrees [34 C]. Keep in mind, it's still officially winter here. We were hanging out that day with a friend of a friend who's from Berazategui and so we had a little tour of the area, which I hardly know at all. Here's a few photos of the Quilmes Balneario, a pier and waterfront complex.

Rodrigo Memorial

rodrigomonument-8191
Just a few hundred meters from the parrilla [in the post below] is a memorial to cuarteto signer Rodrigo Bueno who died in a car crash near the spot in 2000 returning from a gig in La Plata. I remember back during my first stint in Buenos Aires in 1999/2000 Rodgrigo going from a minor regional singer to a national phenomenon. His untimely death launched his fame into the stratosphere and I remember for weeks all the media dealt only with his death and his music was everywhere. Like a lot of deceased idols [Evita, Gilda, Difunta Correa, Gauchito Gil, etc], his memorial has strong religious overtones.

The monument was pretty deserted. It was just these three girls and one of their mothers. They were listening to Rodrigo's music on their cellphone.

I'd recommend checking out some of Rodrigo's music, it's pretty catchy. My favorite song of his is 8:40. I'd also recommend Lo Mejor de Amor and Soy Cordobes, the latter being his anthem because he was from Cordoba. The style of music he played, Cuarteto, is strongly identified with the province.

An invitation advertised as a day in the campo turned out to be a parrilla next to the La Plata freeway under some power lines. No matter, the bondiola de cerdo was the best I've ever had.

Old Cars in Almagro

I love the color of this Fiat 600 and the way the dark green ficus above shelters and frames it.
