Chalets with Cars

Eventually I decided I didn't want any cars parked in front of the Chalets that I'm photographing. Still, a part of me thinks the cars are interesting. They're a specific detail that it's particular to the time and place and will serve to identify when the pictures were taken.

In Burzaco. The car drove up right before I took the picture. Darn!

Chalets Obscured by Trees

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-15
In Barracas. I usually like the photograph in winter. There's more cloudy weather, it's not as hot and there's no leaves on the trees to obscure the details of the architecture. It's a different look. I like it in this photo.

In the town of Ezeiza, this is really an A-frame, not a Chalet.

Chalet Rejects 2

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-19
In Burzaco. I love the fact that it's slightly unfinished as well as the irregularity of gabled windows.

Chalet Rejects

For my Chalet series on my personal website I heavily edited down the number of photos I'm showing. These are Chalets that for whatever reason, didn't make the final cut.

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-17
I really like this chalet, it's so perfect and I love how the shrub in front perfectly covers the doorway. This house is in Lanus. This photo didn't make it because it's not urban enough. I will eventually have to make a series of Chalets in the conurbano, but until then...

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-14
With the purple column and mirrored windows this house in Flores was too kitschy even for me.

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-13
I have a bunch of Chalet's shot from the corner, which is a different look. I was in Haedo in the late afternoon and the light here was gorgeous.

Mircolandscaping 2

I like both of these photos but they're very similiar to others already in my Buenos Aires Hybrids series.

Difunta Correa Casita

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-01
I took this photo in November of 2008 while visiting the Difunta Correa Santuario in San Juan province. I posted about my trip over a year ago. While there I also shot two rolls of medium format. Again with the Mamiya C220, being able to focus really close let me play with the perspective. This is actually a small model house left in thanks to the popular saint.

Microlandscaping

One subject that I've been shooting periodically is the microlandscaping that adorns building lobbies and sidewalks. I'm not crazy about either of these pictures and I'm a bit at a loss as to why I got them scanned, but here they are.

Verduleria - Medium Format 2

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-08
One of the things I love about the vegetable stands in Buenos Aires is the care in the arrangement of the produce. They're ephemeral sculptural arrangements put together daily. This verduleria series I shot on my Mamiya C220. One of the cool things about the camera is that it has this internal bellows that extends out really far [see picture] and thus lets you focus on things really close up.

The color is a little funky on this photo above. Fixing color in Photoshop drives me mad.

Verduleria - Medium Format 1

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-02
So about two months ago I relaunched my personal website, www.thomaslockehobbs.com, to show off some portfolios of work I'd taken around Buenos Aires, mostly shot on medium format cameras [a Mamiya 7 and Mamiya C220, in case you're interested. I got about 100 negatives scanned at the lab but only used about 30. This website is a lot more lightly edited so I figured it would be a good place to publish these photos. These first photos are from a series I did of verdulerias.

Racing Puto

racing-puto-rojo-4255
Just to be clear, I do not follow local soccer nor am I a fan of either Racing or Independientes, their rival. I'm more fascinated by the casual invocation of a certain homophobic epithet in the ongoing dialogue between fans of rival soccer clubs conducted, in graffiti, on the city's walls.

I don't live in this apartment but I sure wish I did for the view. This is in Las Cañitas looking northwards. See also Night in Las Cañitas, another view from the same apartment taken with a much better camera.

Murgas - Montevideo Carnaval

In honor of carnaval, here are a few images of a Murga rehearsal taken in Montevideo back in December:

Mustard Yellow Tile

muddy-yellow-tile-green-toldo-4274
Lately I've been obsessed with mustard yellow tiles which were popular in the 1960s and 1970s to put on exteriors, but just as an accent. See an earlier post, Planta Baja. The second photo shows how this tile is usually used. This building covered its whole facade with the tile. Its way too much but I love it anyway. Colegio San Jose

colegiosanjose-4292
Right in the heart of Once is Colegio San Jose, a catholic school with a spectacular patio. I had one of my classes last semester here and it was always a pleasure to come a few minutes early and enjoy the vista.

CAPuto

A clever suffix.
