A photoblog with large images of Buenos Aires - Active 2008 - 2011

Che Atelier

This is the hallway of a painting studio in Palermo. I love the Che Guevara bust. Taken with a 4x5 camera.

Sunset over Once

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-54
From the 18th floor roof of a friend's building in Congreso on Avenida Rivadavia. This was taken with my 4x5 camera just after sunset.

Radical Pintada in Chacarita

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-62
Pintada politica in Chacarita, in front of Parque Los Andes. For me, it's the cobblestones that make this picture. UCR = Union Civica Radical, the historical opposition party to the Peronists.

Rojo Puto

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-60
Some pro-Racing, anti-Independientes graffiti in Santos Lugares. See also, Soy Puto, Soy de Racing. Basically it's fans of two opposing teams calling eachother faggots. If you believe both sides, all soccer fans are gay. Hmmm....

Soccer Club in Abasto

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-61
On Sanchez de Bustamante. Those are the Abasto towers in the background.

Ituzaingó Chalet

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-52
A few blocks from the plaza. Paraná + Chalet

Gran Ituzaingó

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-59
The plaza on the south side of the train station in Ituzaingó in the Zona Oeste of Buenos Aires' suburbs. I like the condor and the araucaria tree as they let you know you're in South America. The art deco building in the background is an old movie palace called Gran Ituzaingó.

A momument to the Malvinas war.

San Martin & Pibes

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-57
This is near the train station in the town of Ezeiza. These guys were working for some English institute, trying to get people to sign up for classes. They were standing in front of this bust of San Martin and asked if I'd take their picture. I posed them, of course.

Wide Angle, from Below

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-46
I usually shoot with a normal lens in soft light and straight on. It's good to break the one's self-imposed rules occasionally. I shot this house in Flores, near Parque Chacabuco with a 55mm lens on my Mamiya C220 on a very sunny afternoon.

Lanus. I love the green of the roof tiles and bars against the bright white paint.

Villa Devoto, near the prison.

Villa Bosch in springtime [you can tell by the leaves].

Mustard Yellow Tile

Another recurring series still in its infancy. A lot of colonial-style buildings are painted white with this mustard yellow trim. The color got recycled in the 60's and 70's and can occasionally be found on houses.

In Villa Pueyrredon.

In Caballito.

Houses & Classic Cars

It's easy to fall into the trap of taking pictures of old cars. It's easy nostalgia, like all those books on Havana, Cuba. Still, it's hard to resist.

A Renault 12 station wagon parked in front of an amazing faux-stone house in Santos Lugares.

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-31
Half of a red Renault 12 parked in front of a sort of post-modern Chalet in Caballito.

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-32
Ford Falcon and Faux-stone house in Parque Avellaneda.

Houses & Cars

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-30
I loved the play of the red and black between the house and the car and also the great art deco details as well. This was just off Avenida Warnes in Villa Crespo.

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-29
A great art deco facade in Flores. I like that there's a Peugeot 206 parked in front.

ThomasLockeHobbs-BuenosAires-Film-25
In Barracas. Peugeot 504 parked in front.
