Pueyrredon & Cordoba Rooftop

Views from the 13th floor rooftop of a friend's building on Pueyrredon & Cordoba. Unfortunately it was raining so I didn't take any pictures with my large format camera. I'll have to come back another evening.

I love views like this of Buenos Aires.

A lot of these rooftops don't have any sort of railing.

Bizarro House in Villa Pueyrredon

I like the contrast of this house's tropical landscaping contrasted with the bare winter trees surrounding it.

La Manzanita in Villa Pueyrredon

The appropriately named Parrilla La Manzanita in Villa Pueyrredon.

[Manzana, in Spanish means "apple" and it also means "block"--not the distance of a city block, that's cuadra, but rather the 4 sides that define the square area of a city block]

Mundial Fever

I was in the microcentro this Tuesday afternoon during the Argentina vs. Greece game, which Argentina won. I had heard that things shut down but to experience it was uncanny. The streets were quiet [until two goals were scored late in the game]. Here's a few snapshots during the game:

The lab where I get my film processed, Buenos Aires Color, set up chairs in the lobby so all their employees could watch the game. The only other customers who came in during the hour I was there was an American couple. Go figure.

Oh yeah, and I just got back from a 10 day trip to Bogota, Colombia. Great city, here's some pictures on flickr that I took.

Fifa Sport - Argentine Camera

Fifa Sport
A fellow photographer gave me this camera. It's called a Fifa Sport and is an Argentine made camera, probably from the 1950s. It uses 120 film and uses a fixed 75mm lens and a single aperture, f13.5. There's no information on the shutter speed but the guy who gave it to me said it was probably around 1/50 of a second. This means the exposure would've been optimized for sunlight and ASA 50 film. I'm thinking of beach snapshots in Mar del Plata in the 1950s. I'll have to figure out what to photograph with this camera.

Chalet & Tennis Court in Palermo

This view is from the same 11th floor balcony as yesterday's post but, given my interest in chalets, I figured this picture deserved its own post. I always kinda of wonder what's behind the kitchsy facade. Here's a rare and spectacular example. This is on Soler in Palermo. I'm sure they could sell the adjacent plot for a lot of money but instead they've turned it into a [very narrow] tennis court. Amazing!

Palermo Sunset - Sanchez de Bustamante & Soler

These photos are snapshots with my small digital camera. I'm also photographing the urban landscape with my 4x5 camera on these occasions. Once I have a decent series and some good scans, I'll share them here. Here are a few pictures from a friend's balcony on the 11th floor in Palermo.

Notice the giant dustball on the right, just above the buildings. I really need to get a new & better point & shoot. I have a much nicer digital SLR but I'm reluctant to take it with me on these trips as I want to limit my potential losses should I ever be robbed.

Caballito Contrafrente Sunset

My cheap radio flash trigger died so I had to by a synch cable. I got this, which was made in Argentina.

Sub-Station

italo-argentine-casafoust-5863
Scattered around the city are these small electric substations, mostly built by Compania Italo-Argentina de Electricidad or C.I.A.E. Usually they're impossible to photograph as they're blocked by trees, parked cars, kiosks, etc. This one was rare in that it was totally visible. Oddly, though, the style is different from the typical brick, medieval facades used. Here's an example from flickr of what they typically look like.
