Old Cars in Caballito

My sunny day wanderings have taken me of late to Caballito and Flores. I'm not looking for old cars but they're always tempting to photograph.

Great corner too! I believe this is on Felipe Vallese, or at least one of those street parallel to Avenida Gaona. The corner is Paez and Condarco and, technically, in Flores.

San Nicolas Rooftop

From the 11th floor rooftop terrace of a building in San Nicolas. Most people in Buenos Aires have cable so the TV antennas are a bit anachronistic.

I love it when the sky has roughly the same amount of light as the streetlights.

Pueyrredon & Cordoba Rooftop - II

cordoba-pueyrredon-sunset-6836
Evening sky reflected in balcony sliding doors. A shame about the noise & the camera shake. It looked great on the LCD. I should dar mas bola to these digital snaps.

A little earlier, I love the tone in the sky.

My 4x5 all set-up. There's a 13 story drop on the other side of that small rise.

Double Chalet in Caballito

Two chalet-style duplexes side by side on Nicolas Repetto in Caballito. With these duplexes I always wonder who gets the middle window on the 2nd floor [primer piso, in Spanish].

Recently I was able to photograph from the 7th floor roof terrace of a building right in the heart of microcentro. It's amazing the cables that are strung from building to building, spanning the empty pulmon like so many spider webs.

Chalets with Cars in Caballito

chalet-caballito-car-6757

chalet-caballito-car-6758
I've been photographing more chalets recently after a hiatus. Winter is a good season because there are a lot of cloudy days and no leaves on the trees. I've decided I'm primarily interested in chalets that are situated between two more traditional style buildings. A lot of these are to be found in slightly more central neighborhoods like Caballito and Almagro. Further out in Liniers or Devoto basically everything is a chalet and you don't get that contrast. One of the challenges, however, is finding one with no cars parked in front of it. I've been walking on a lot of busier streets which often prohibit parking on one side, in hopes of coming across a chalet. The two houses above would've been perfect for my series if not for the obstacles in my way.

Caballito North

July 4th was one of those perfect Sundays; light cloud cover, few cars parked on the street, and extreme tranquility in the city [everyone was depressed after Argentina's loss to Germany the previous day]. I went Chalet hunting in the part of Caballito that sits between the Sarmiento line and Juan B Justo [there's a lot]. Unfortunately after a roll of film my Mamiya 7 stopped firing and I had to return home. Anyway, here's a few snapshots with the point & shoot:

I found this chalet after my camera stopped working. I wrote down the address so I can return.

This parrilla smelled great. On my sunday walks I'm often accompanied by the smell of asado and the distant sound of cumbia.

Parque Las Heras Closed to Build Parking Lot

Buenos Aires mayor Mauricio Macri has done some interesting, pedestrian-friendly projects like convert Calle 25 de Mayo into a pedestrian street. Recently, however, the majority of of Parque Las Heras was fenced off to construct an underground parking lot. Cities don't need more parking spaces! The closure of one of Buenos Aires' finest parks for a year is inexcusable. The silver lining is that the bright yellow fence is quickly being covered with anti-Macri graffiti, easily seen by bus passengers on one of Buenos Aires' busiest avenues. Hopefully the public relations of this will be so bad that the project will be reconsidered.
parquelasheras-macri-6890
"PRO" is Macri's insta-party, he'll probably run in 2011 for president against the Kirchners, the "K" in the graffiti above.

parquelasheras-macri-6888

The graffiti reads, "Macri: this is a park not a business," the implication being that business interests and corrupt payoffs are motivating this project.

Recoleta 9th Floor Contrafrente

From the 9th floor, contrafrente, balcony of a friend's parent's apartment in Recoleta. This was a great pulmon de manzana and the fog was the icing on the cake.

Boca or River?

I've recently started two projects where it's key that I note every detail of my set-up and exposure. To simplify things I bought separate notebooks for each project:

Boca River

Decentral Air

Architect friends from the US and Europe often comment about how large buildings lack centralized AC units. This hideous building on Conde in Belgrano R made this reality part of its design. Woe to the tenant who wants to install a split unit.

Sunny Saavedra - II

I've been spending a lot of time in Saavedra lately for this one sunny day project. Here are some more snapshots:

I've finally found a project that requires bright sun and cloudless skies. I'm photographing a certain type of building with my large format camera. Of course I always take my point & shoot with me. Here's a few snapshots from a recent trip to Saavedra:

A great art deco house that was horribly back lit. That's a piece of my hand in the upper left trying to shade the lens. I'll have to go back and shoot this corner on a cloudy day.
