A photoblog with large images of Buenos Aires - Active 2008 - 2011

Lobby in Barrio Norte

MF-2009-036-04-lamplobby
This is the lobby of a friend's building in Barrio Norte. I was trying out my then recently acquired wide angle lens for my Mamiya C220. I'm going to be posting a lot of my old film archives as I recently have been able to borrow a scanner and digitize some of my film stuff.

El Ceibo for Financial Times

Cristina Lescano of El Ceibo Cooperative.

In August I was hired to shoot a story about a recycling cooperative in Buenos Aires run by cartoneros. This was the first time my photos have been published in an important, international newspaper. The story is here: Self-respect at the bottom of the heap.

Palo Borracho in Puerto Madero

MF-2008-001-14-paloborracho
There's a grove of recently planted palo borrachos on the southern end of Puerto Madero, near the entrance that follows from Avenida Independencia. I took this photo in 2008. It was the first roll of film I'd shot since 2005.

Rivera, Uruguay

On a bit of a whim I took a bus from Buenos Aires to Rivera, Uruguay. It's a single city divided between two countries. The Brazilian side is called Santana do Livramento. Like few places I've been in the world, the border is completely open within the city. It's nothing more than an avenue that runs through the center of town. People cross freely from one side to the other. I spent most of my time on the Uruguayan side where there are a lot of duty free stores. See my complete set on flickr.

Evita's Evolving Hairstyles

evita-busts
I've taken to snapping pictures of the backside of any golden Evita bust I come across. The main squares of small towns in Argentina typically contain busts of national heroes, often painted gold. San Martin is a no-brainer. Evita is still, perhaps, a little controversial but one finds them nevertheless. I'm fascinated at how her iconic hairstyle varies from bust to bust.

Locations from left to right: Llavallol, Comodoro Rivadavia, San Isidro. Obviously to develop this series more, I need to travel out of Buenos Aires more.

Spring Day in Buenos Aires

September 21st is the first day of spring in the southern hemisphere. Students get the day off and descend en masse from all over greater Buenos Aires to the parks in Palermo and Recoleta.

Chalet / Castle in Villa Adelina

chalet-castillo-7165
I know a photographer who shoots castle-style houses. I told him that if we got married [now legal in Argentina], this would be our dream home.

Ochava Shadow - Fernandez Moreno & Malvinas Argentinas

Just a block away from yesterday's post.

Happy spring!

Ochava Shadow - Bacacay & Gavilan

The car on the left was in the frame for the large format shot so I didn't stick around for the "solstice".

12th Floor from Torre Dorrego

View at dusk from an apartment on the 12th floor of Torre Dorrego

A friend lives in the apartment in the middle with its lights on. I called him up and asked him to turn on all the lights.

More pics of Torre Dorrego, the ugliest building in Buenos Aires.

Vereda de Tomas

sidwalk-thomas-7015
Given that each property owner is responsible for the sidewalk paving, I'm surprised I don't see more customizations like this.

Hospital Israelita

hospital-israelita-7010
Hospital Israelita on Avenida Gaona. I like the contrast of the grandeur of the original building with the functional squatness of the newer attachment. I also like that they were adding a fresh coat of verde ingles.

San Telmo Secret Garden

Hidden away in a passageway behind a tall building I found this intimate little space. I'm not telling where it is because I'm not sure I remember.

Comodoro Rivadavia

comodoro-7471
I recently traveled to Comodoro Rivadavia in Patagonia for a few days to take pictures. The city is an oil boom town lacking in major tourist attractions. I went there looking for a certain kind of landscape to photograph. Since this location is a little off-topic for this blog, I'll just include this picture. If you're interested, however, please check out my full set on flickr.

Jardin Botanico at noon

jardinbotanico
Recently I was able to borrow a nice Epson flatbed scanner and managed to scan some of my medium format negatives like this one above, which I took in the Jardin Botanico around noon. This was taken with my Fuji GW670II, aka, the Texas Leica.

Round Ochava Shadows

I think these will be better in summer when the sun is higher and the shadow longer.

Ochava Shadow - Paez & Terrada

ochava-shadow-paez-terrada-7008
This was the other corner I mentioned in Friday's post. Great colors too.

Ochava Shadow - Boyaca & Alejandro Cervantes

ochava-shadow-boyaca-alejandrocervantes-7035
Usually I've scouted out the corner and I return on a sunny day at the appointed hour to take the photograph. If everything goes right, I'll take exactly one photo in a single day. This day was unusual, after photographing one corner I walked to a different neighborhood to scout for some more corners. The street grid shifted slightly, orienting the buildings slightly further to the west and allowing me time to photograph this corner here. Two in a day!

Ochava Shadow - Camarones & Andres Lamas

ochava-shadow-andreslamas2000-7036
The slightly beveled edge of the corner might disqualify this one, altho I love the color of the tiles on the ground floor.
